| The Story of Susi’s Family |
| Wednesday, 12 November 2008 04:57 |
Susi’s mother was the second wife of a construction builder. The husband left the family about a year ago. With the high unemployment rate, no social security and no free childcare facilities in Indonesia, the mother had no choice but to take both of her children, Eko (8 yo) and Susi (3 yo) to a land contracted by a leader of the scavengers. They have been living there on this land ever since. She lives in a house of only 4 sqm with walls made of thin and cheap pressed wood, a roof made of corrugated iron and floors of soil covered by plastic. Here the mother “works” as a scavenger, collecting stuff made of plastic, wood and paper from people’s garbage and deposit them to the leader who then will sell it to recycle companies. The leader then pays the mother a sum of money according to how much she collects. Her income ranges from US$3-6/ week. Susy is now 3 years old but weighs only as much as an average 1-year-old Indonesian child. When her mother works she hardly eats. Her neighbors that take care of her in the land is just as poor as her. Even if she has some food, she does not get enough nutrition as a child should get. Her brother Eko goes to a free public school. Unfortunately, free schools are not exactly the best place to learn anything in Indonesia. After school he goes and helps his mother collecting stuff from people’s garbage. If he does not go to work, Eko goes to the shelter house for some nutritious food and better education. |
